The “5 countries 1 river” Erasmus+ program was launched in the category of public education under the coordination of the Plastic Cup Society with the participation of 10 partners in cooperation with 5 countries. During the three years, they worked together with teachers, environmental educators, and NGO representatives from the 5 countries of the Tisza River Basin, with the aim of sensitizing primary school students to river protection, educating them on waste prevention, and teaching them the possibilities and importance of recycling plastic waste. In addition to exchange student programs, teacher training, film courses, factory visits and numerous river cleanup actions, the result of the project is 3 textbooks and a supplementary children’s storybook. The books can be a supplement to elementary school environmental education or the independent content of a thematic camp or school theme week. By reading the books and watching the tutorial videos, it becomes clear to both students and teachers how selective waste collection can turn into fun, and how many things we can do for plastic free rivers.
The 5in1 project activities first were carried out in Hungarian. This work language was chosen for two main reasons. First, the Plastic Cup initiative, the coordinator of the project started in Hungary, secondly, this is the language that is commonly spoken in the entire Tisza River Basin. We made a try with English, but many of the teachers were not so comfortable with that. So cutting the long story short, all the books and tutorial videos in this project were developed in Hungarian, then translated into all other Tisza languages, namely Ukrainian, Romanian, Slovakian and Serbian.
The COVID-19 epidemic and the war in Ukraine made the implementation of this project very difficult. We struggled a lot to keep in touch, to meet regularly and develop high-standard books and videos. Finally, we could make it, for that a big salute to all the teachers and schools who participated in the project. To learn more about the project, please visit the official website and read our books and watch our videos! We hope you, your school will soon become a part of the RiverSaver School Network, working together for the plastic free Tisza river!
